June brings warmth and storms!
The season for storms as begun. The 2023 hurricane season is forecasting a likely range of 12 to 17 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 5 to 9 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 1 to 4 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher).
Major hurricanes are Category 3, 4 or 5 and have sustained winds of 111 mph or higher. These hurricanes can cause catastrophic damage that could result in widespread power outages and leave residential and commercial properties uninhabitable for several days to months.
The 2023 hurricane season is the seventh consecutive above-average hurricane season. This year is likely to have increased activity due to several climate factors, including:
- La Niña
- Warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea
- Weaker tropical Atlantic trade winds
- An enhanced West African monsoon
The official Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to Nov. 30, but hurricanes and severe storms can form before or after.

What is a Storm?
10/18/2021 (Permalink)
The word "storm" has several meanings and can be used differently depending on the phrase. The common term and definition and the one most commonly know by SERVPRO is weather related, such as an event causing strong winds and usually rain, thunder, lightening and snow. Storms such as Hurricanes and Tropical storms are given names while others like Tornadoes are ranked by numbers.
Additional definitions are a tumultuous reaction, an uproar or controversy. A violent or noisy outburst of a specified feeling or reaction. It can also mean to move angrily or forcefully in a specified direction. And finally to suddenly attack and capture a building or place by means or force. Hopefully you don't have to encounter a storm of any kind, but if its weather related we here at SERVPRO are ready to calm the storm that has overtaken your property.
Weekends at The Jersey Shore
8/20/2021 (Permalink)
Another tropical storm threatens our weekend. Tropical Storm Henri will not be a direct hit but will give us rain and coastal flooding. Tropical storm Henri is traveling towards Long Island, New York. The forecast predicts that New Jersey will be spared. But if you live at the Jersey Shore, you know that any and every storm that passes our way tends to still bring coastal flooding and heavy winds. We are entering the close of summer, and our weekends that are meant for fun in the sun and at the beach have been put off by rainy Saturdays and Sundays. This weekend is no exception. We are all grateful the storm will pass us by and our thoughts and prayers go out to the areas that are hit by this and any storm but we are still disappointed yet again another weekend is gone.
But never fear! SERVPRO is always here!
If you have any weather related issues, any day of the week, we are always here to help!
Storms Bring More Than Wind

Moisture Brings Humidity, Which Brings Frizz!
Hey, Ocean County, you feel that in the air? No, we’re not talking about love. We’re talking about humidity *ick*. The storm season has become and with summer almost here, that means high humidity. If you care about your hair like most of us do, hold onto your hat! Frizz isn’t the only annoyance humidity brings. If you live here in Ocean County, you already know that uncontrolled humidity can contribute to not just frizzy hair but mold growth in your home or business. If you are just visiting, or are new to the area, now you know! Some of the key indicators of humidity to be aware of are musty odors, sweaty windows, and even damp feeling bedsheets. Oh, and don’t forget frizzy hair! We find that unattended crawlspaces, undiscovered leaks, and malfunctioning HVAC systems are the primary causes of these issues. Left unattended, excessive humidity can escalate to mold and indoor air quality issues. So, if you think you have an issue, or if you find mold in your house, who do you call? Your neighborhood remediation experts at SERVPRO of Manahawkin.

Coastal Storm Path Over New Jersey
Well, we are starting to relax here at the Jersey Shore. The Storm season is behind us. Winter months are fading and warmer weather is at our back door. This past winter, it was bad enough most of us were under quarantine due to the ever-famous virus but there were 4 Tornadoes, and don’t forget the Tropical Storms. Storm Isaias hit in August. Did you know that storm knocked out power to 1.4 million residents and businesses. 2 of the Tornadoes were sparked by Isaias. We had one of them touch down right here in Brant Beach and Ship Bottom with winds reported as high as 110mph. We even had a spinning waterspout in the Barnegat Bay. Then there was Tropical Storm Fay. That storm surprised us by making its initial landfall in New Jersey. The last time that happened was in 1903 by Hurricane Vagabond. There were other hurricanes, Laura, Sally, Delta and Zeta. We had heavy rain and gusty winds from the remnants of those storms. Don’t forget the “Snow”! It wasn’t classified a storm but sure did create havoc. Monmouth and Ocean County had 6 to 12 inches! There were several Thunderstorms that produced big hail stones. To get back to the change in weather, we can’t relax. It is still possible to get storms or record-breaking events. Last July was the hottest month on record. The extreme heat causes power outages as well.

When Lightning Strikes, Who Do You Call?
7/1/2020 (Permalink)
Storm Damage from Lightning
Thunder and lightning can be cool to watch. It’s a great party-starter and sometimes gets you to call the neighbors over for a front porch pizza party so you can watch it together. Before you call the pizza guy, there’s another number you need to save in your phone: 609-549-0379. That’s the number for SERVPRO of Manahawkin.
What most don’t think about when the lightning strikes are the damages that it can cause to your home. The damage from a direct hit can be devastating and we’ve all seen the pictures. However, indirect lightning strikes can cause tremendous damage that sometimes is not immediately apparent. Plumbing, electrical and electronic components are examples of building components that are vulnerable to the tremendous physical and electrical impacts caused by an indirect lightning strike. Some examples of these items are Computers, Thermostats, HVAC Equipment, Sprinkler Timers, Outdoor Lighting Equipment, Pool Equipment, Well Pumps, Generators and Alarm System Components.
SERVPRO of Manahawkin has a team of cleanup specialists with the experience, equipment, and training to help restore your property after storm damage. Call one of the experts on the SERVPRO of Manahawkin Storm Team at 609-549-0379.

The key to avoid long term damage and rapid recovery from weather events is immediate response and securing the property from further damage. - Have candles or a generator handy for power loss.

Tornado Awareness in Ocean County
6/4/2019 (Permalink)
Tornadoes can appear from any direction. Most move from southwest to northeast, or west to east. Some tornadoes have changed direction amid path, or even backtracked. A tornado can double back suddenly, for example, when its bottom is hit by outflow winds from a thunderstorm's core. Tornadoes are not common in our area but as of the past few years the weather conditions have surprised the north east and tornadoes have been reported on the east coast.
That is why having a tornado plan for your home and family in place is a good idea. Based on the type of home you live in you need to know where you can take shelter in a matter of seconds, and practice a family tornado drill at least once a year. Have a pre-determined place to meet after a disaster. Flying objects is the greatest danger in tornadoes; so store protective coverings (e.g., mattress, sleeping bags, thick blankets, etc) in or next to your shelter space, ready to use on a few seconds' notice. When a tornado watch is issued, think about the drill and check to make sure all your safety supplies are handy. Turn on local TV, radio or NOAA Weather Radio and stay alert for warnings. Forget about the old notion of opening windows to equalize pressure; the tornado will blast open the windows for you!
The Ocean County area has plenty of designated storm shelters, know where they are. You may even take notice in certain stores there are designated areas, learn where there are bathrooms, storage rooms or other interior shelter areas away from windows, and the shortest ways to get there. Most schools, shopping centers, nursing homes, hospitals, sports arenas, stadiums, mobile home communities and offices should have a tornado safety plan in place, with easy-to-read signs posted to direct everyone to a safe, nearby shelter area. Schools and office building managers should regularly run well-coordinated drills.

What To Do Before and During a Severe Storm
3/2/2018 (Permalink)
If your home or business has experienced storm damage and you are unsure on how to actually seek help in this sort of process or you are unsure if you are even covered for such loss, please remain calm. We understand this process may be frightening at first, but there are several professionals that can and will assist you during this process. If you need immediate help, please contact SERVPRO of Manahawkin, by calling 609-549-0379. We are willing to help you through this process, but for general tips and best practices, please follow the outline below provided by United Policy Holders and what they tell their clients during the process of storm aftermath.
What to do before and during a severe storm:
- If you live on or at the foot of a hillside, place sandbags around the perimeter of your home.
- Place rolled up towels along the inside of exterior doors to prevent water from getting in.
- Do your best to keep your gutters clear but stay safe throughout the storm.
- Move valuables and items up from lower levels and away from doors and windows.
- Find a copy of your insurance policy. Check the wording on water damage and the amount of your deductible
- Use the free UPHelp Home Inventory App to photo document key features of your home that could be damaged (windows, siding, roof and interior) and your possessions.
What to do after the storm:
- If your home was damaged, focus on creating a scope of everything that was damaged and what it will cost to repair or replace.
- To keep a clean record and avoid premium increases, don't file a claim until you review your policy and you think your loss will exceed your deductible and be covered. Read: To claim or not to claim...
- If the damage was sudden and accidental and triggered by the storm, don't accept a claim denial argument from your insurer or agent that it was due to faulty construction or maintenance. The insurer cashed your premium checks and insured your property "as is".
- If you file a claim and your insurer rejects it, make sure you get a clear and detailed explanation of their position. Read: www.uphelp.org/speakUP. Claim and coverage disputes are rarely as clear cut as your insurer makes them out to be.
- The answer to whether your town or city will pay to repair flooding damage to your home is..."it depends."

Insurance tips for storm damage

Insurance tips for storm damage
