Allergies & Dust

DUST written on a surface with allot of dust
Most of us perform regular housecleaning on a daily basis to help allergy triggers and help relieve your symptoms. Here are some ways to keep your house clean and your allergies under control:
- Vacuum once or twice a week. Make sure your vacuum has a HEPA filter. Some allergens are so small that they pass right through a regular vacuum filter. That means that every time you vacuum, you could be sucking them off the floor and shooting them into the air, where you breathe them in.
- Cut clutter. Piles of boxes or clothing can trap dust and hide allergens like dust mites and cockroaches.
- Keep the bathroom free of mold. Scrub the tile regularly. Don't forget the shower curtain, too. You may be able to toss it in the washing machine.
- Wash sheets weekly in hot water. Make sure it's at least 130 F. That's hot enough to kill dust mites. If your child has allergies, do the same with any washable stuffed animals.
- Don't use scented cleaners or detergents. If you have allergies, the fragrances in cleaners can trigger symptoms. Look for fragrance-free products instead.
- Use a damp cloth and mop when cleaning. They'll trap allergens instead of knocking them into the air.
- Clean outside entryways. Sweep or vacuum. The cleaner your path or patio is, the less likely someone is to track dust or pollen into your house.
- Take shoes off before you go in the house. That way pollens or other triggers won’t get tracked in.
- Keep pets out of the bedroom. It's a key way to protect yourself from dander. Don't ever let pets sleep on the bed if you have pet allergies.
- Use air-conditioning. Instead of opening windows when it’s hot, use the AC. An air conditioner will filter the air, preventing dust, dirt, pollens, molds, and other triggers from getting in.

Why PPE?
4/5/2022 (Permalink)
Did you know that long before the Covid-19 outbreak, SERVPRO has been responding to disinfecting and cleaning services related to viral pathogens that falls under what we classify as Biohazard. When you hear that term, you think of the “men in the white suits” covered head-to-toe. Just like in the movies. The scenes have them facing some nuclear reactive situations, harmful chemicals, highly contagious virus’s and in some scenarios, they don’t know what they are facing so they suit up as a precaution. This term is used when there is a hazard to humans or the environment. Biohazard could also be to protect against breathing in harmful material like insulation. PPE, Personal Protective Equipment, consists of face shields, gloves, goggles and glasses, gowns, head covers, masks, respirators, and shoe covers. What is needed is per the environment they are walking into. When the team at SERVPRO responds to a biohazard call, we too are in protective gear appropriate for the type of hazard present. Full PPE gear is necessary when performing mold remediation, working with insulation, going into crawl spaces, bodily fluid clean up, disinfection, and our most popular call for sewage clean up! Simple at home activities may also require some type of PPE. Gloves are most common for cleaning and a respirator or face mask for those Do-It-Yourself projects. PPE is more available and has now become a part of our everyday life due to the Corona virus. We are wearing face masks to protect ourselves and others form contracting or passing the virus. The term “Stop the Spread” explains it well. Safety first!
A Restoration Company You Can Trust
1/3/2022 (Permalink)
Water damage events in Ocean County are especially unique to the area and require a knowledgeable and flexible response from a restoration specialist who understands the limitations specific to our area. A good portion of properties are unoccupied for long periods of time or are income properties, especially along Long Beach Island, and you, the homeowner is out of state or hours away and cannot be present. You need a restoration team that you can trust. We can work remotely with homeowners to get the property secured and stabilized.
We are sensitive to the needs of our population as well as the environmental conditions, typical to southern Jersey. If it is rising bay water, flooded crawlspaces, or at times, the inhabitance of raccoons in the attic. You can count on us!
Who Else Are You Going To Call
10/18/2021 (Permalink)
We have often run into scenarios where the public does not know exactly what we do here at SERVPRO of Manahawkin. We do not take it personal or are lead to believe our marketing efforts go unnoticed, because in just about ever service industry where multiped services are available, only one or two stick out. A perfect example is a customer that called in last week. She said she had water damage in her garage that affected her HVAC system, the water was mitigated by the customer and the HVAC system was cleaned and repaired by a local competitor. Now some time has passed and she saw mold outside of her air vents, she called the vendor and they came back, wiped the mold spots and said everything should be ok. That was not the case, mold has been appearing throughout the home on the vents. The customer reached out to us for advise. We suggested testing and as expected the results of elevated levels throughout the home. The customer said she had no idea we did Duct cleaning and that is why she used another company. She said if she knew we did that service she would of had used us. Many companies claim to be the experts in remediation, our experience and knowledge makes us a leader in the industry. I tell customers, no matter what is wrong in your home or business, call us, and if we cant help you we will find you someone who can.

Our defensive cleaning program gives your business a way forward by providing your employees and customers ongoing safety.
Let us help you get back to business
As our communities re-open, we’re all moving back toward a new kind of normal. The expectations of visitors, customers, and employees who come into our establishments have evolved, and staying safe and well is a top concern. The global COVID-19 pandemic has changed what it means to be clean, and we’ve developed a program to help your business meet the new higher standard of clean that is now expected.
Although vaccinations are available, not everyone intends to or has had the option to receive it. The CDC claims you can still contract Covid-19 after being vaccinated but with less risk. For this reason, we still need to be proactive in keeping safe.
Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned is a defensive cleaning program we’re offering to businesses and commercial locations to address the current COVID-19 pandemic. This proactive viral pathogen cleaning program goes well beyond janitorial or carpet cleaning. By choosing Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, you, your employees, your customers, and your community can rest assured that you’ve selected a higher cleaning standard – you are Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned.
Extensive training and specialized products
As the #1 choice in cleanup and restoration*, we stand on more than 50 years of experience and expertise to help your business become Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned. Beyond fire & water, SERVPRO professionals are trained and experienced in biohazard decontamination and chemical spills – always adhering to the cleaning and decontamination standards set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local authorities.
From formulating and creating our proprietary cleaning products, like SERVPROXIDE, at our headquarters in Gallatin, TN, to taking the utmost care while disinfecting, we will ensure you and your business are set up to inspire consumer confidence as the economy continues to reopen.
3 C’s – Consult, Clean, and Certify
When the stakes are this high, you want a partner who has developed an industry leading, proprietary training program, cleaning solutions, and remediation processes over decades. We’ve cleaned up some of the most challenging biohazards imaginable. Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned reflects our unique experiences and capabilities. The program is grounded with our unique 3 C’s: Consult, Clean, and Certify.
- Consult – Every business is different, which is why you’ll be assigned a Cleaning Protocol Consultant who understands your business and will create a cleaning program to meet your specific needs. This program will be developed based on your business type, size of space, amount of high frequency touchpoints, foot traffic and congestion points.
- Clean – Based on your specific business needs, your location will undergo a thorough, deep clean, using exclusive cleaning products, according to protocols set forth by the CDC. Our employees have years of experience, and we will go beyond the scope of work that regular janitorial staff perform. Cleanup procedures generally include cleaning of porous and non-porous surfaces, disinfecting of non-porous surfaces, cleaning and disinfecting of equipment, tools, and/or supplies used for cleanup process, and disposal of hazardous materials. In the event of a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 event, we will be there cleaning within 24 hours to ensure you get back to business as quickly as possible.
- Certify - Once your business location has been Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, you will gain access to proprietary signage, digital emblems, and other collateral that communicates that you’ve selected a higher standard of clean available to help protect your employees and customers. And because we add the day, month, and year to that proprietary stamp of clean, your guests will know that not only did you choose Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, but that your location is being cleaned regularly at this standard.

The Term Bio Hazard and PPE
3/15/2021 (Permalink)
An example of someone in types of PPE
Long before the Covid-19, SERVPRO has been responding to disinfecting and cleaning services related to viral pathogens that falls under what we classify as Bio Hazard. When you hear that term, you think of the men in head-to-toe protective suits, like you have seen in the movies. The scene has them facing some nuclear reactive situations, harmful chemicals, highly contagious virus’s and in some scenarios, they don’t know what they are facing so they suit up as a precaution. This term is used when there is a hazard to humans or the environment. Another term you are hearing related to Corona virus or bio hazard is PPE, Personal Protective Equipment, which consist of face shields, gloves, goggles and glasses, gowns, head covers, masks, respirators, and shoe covers. When the team at SERVPRO responds to a bio hazard call, we too are in protective gear appropriate for the type of hazard present.
Will 2021 Have The Answer?
3/3/2021 (Permalink)
People wondering the answer to a question
By now everyone throughout the country has experienced the effects of the Covid-19 Pandemic. The impact the virus has had on us has been both physical and emotional. Did you get the virus? Do you know someone that tested positive? Did you help stop the spread? Were you able to quarantine? How did this affect you?
We were all so hopeful the quarantine would be over by the year's end. Here we are in 2021, early March, almost a year later, and we are only just getting the opportunity to be vaccinated. But even that has become a struggle and the supply is short. So now we ask, how can I get vaccinated? Throughout the United States, the criteria for vaccination eligibility is determined by each state, with the majority vaccinating seniors first. According to the statistics, the elderly and individuals with certain health conditions have had the highest “Loss of Life” risk. Although we have heard of losses to persons out of those categories.
Speaking as a business owner, limiting the spread of employees and customers has been a task. As a restoration company heavily involved with the disinfection process to many businesses and local residents, the exposure is almost guaranteed. And the ability to quarantine was limited. Quarantining as a Mother, having to distance yourself from your family just to keep them safe. Having to watch your children manage through their everyday life with such outrageous restrictions and all without the assistance of others is difficult because helping them would only put them at risk. As a Grandmother, not seeing the grandchildren has been the hardest thing any grandparent could ever be confronted with. The bonds we create by physical touch, the ability to share experiences, all lost. But luckily, technology has allowed creative ways to commutate and remind them we are still here.
So, again we ask, when will this be over? Will we ever get back to normal? Will we remember what normal is? Will we be questioning 2022?

Green Means Safe and Clean
Clean and Green
Customers are always concerned about the products we use while servicing their home whether it be from a loss due to water, fire, mold damage or in some cases, just general cleaning.
We give you our guarantee that Green Products from SERVPRO Industries provides every local franchise with the safest products needed with “Authentically Botanical Technology”.
The products we use are Authentically Botanical, but what does that mean? Let’s explore the meaning behind the term Authentically Botanical and the commitment to our customers to use products that are safe for them as well as the environment.
Customers have asked what do we mean when we say our products are authentically botanical? “Authentic” is defined as not false or copied, genuine, real. “Botanical” means a substance obtained from a plant. This supports the “Clean & Green” efforts to our planet.
One of the products we use is a disinfectant that was listed as one of the world’s first and is still the ONLY authentically botanical disinfectant technology.
It doesn’t use synthetic active ingredients but contains thyme and other essential oils, that are nonhazardous and sustainable, to kill the germs.
So when you hear the term “Green” from SERVPRO, its not just our color!

How to Clean Your Home and Office
3/6/2020 (Permalink)
Proper cleaning can help maintain healthy families, employees, and businesses! Viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms are ever-present and can be transmitted around homes and workplaces. You know how it works, your coworker comes in and says their kids came home sick, then suddenly the entire office has a cold. These microorganisms travel by latching to moisture, dust, dirt and all kinds of particles. Luckily, cleaning and disinfecting can slow the process and make it harder for these organisms to spread!
Here are 5 tips for cleaning in your home and office.
1. Regularly Vacuum.
The right equipment will make all the difference! HEPA filtered vacuums are designed to get the ultrafine (really super tiny) particles that traditional vacuums won’t.
2. Regular Dusting and Dust Control.
Not everything can be vacuumed effectively, so you have to get in there! Behind the soup cans, tops of the cabinets, ceiling fan blades too! Get after that built-up dust and debris that can harbor germs.
3. Remove the Clutter.
Too much stuff is too much stuff. When your house is packed too tight you can lose beneficial airflow and generate pockets of stagnant air and moisture. Tidy up the clutter and let the breeze blow.
4. Use the Proper Cleaning Methods and the Proper Cleaner.
Dirt and grime can creep into tiny nooks and crannies, making surfaces harder to sanitize, especially if you don’t do it right. Remove heavy dirt by vacuuming and washing with your cleaner of choice, then sanitize or disinfect with your favorite solution. Tip: To be sure you are using the right stuff, read the labels.
5. Deep Clean IT.
Time to go where no one has gone before. You know where, behind the refrigerator, behind the bed, in and under the couch. Don’t forget your vents and air filters. Heavy debris can build up in these places. Keep the change but don’t eat the french fries.
6. BONUS TIP: Call SERVPRO of Manahawkin
We know that deep cleaning can be tough and time-consuming. SERVPRO of Manahawkin has the tools and expertise you need to freshen up your living and workspace.
