Raccoons: Sly Spring Squatters of Ocean County
5/5/2020 (Permalink)
Spring is a time in nature of growth and rebirth. A lot of our furry friends in nature are starting to have their babies. Raccoons are very adaptable and can make a nest just about anywhere...especially in your attic. Unoccupied, warm and safe, your attic is a perfect environment for raccoons to use as a temporary shelter to have their young. No big deal you may ask? Look up images of racoon damage on our webpage and you will change your mind. In the process of making their nest, to start, racoons will tear up insulation and items stored in your attic to create the perfect nesting spot. The damage does not end there. Next, while they are nesting, they will defecate and urinate throughout the area creating a huge mess. Finally, after their babies are ready, and in perfect squatter fashion, they will leave. Often the effects of their activity go undetected until it soaks through to the living space!
Unfortunately, the fluids and feces left behind can contain many germs and pathogens that can be hazardous to humans. Addressing this damage requires special equipment and training to decontaminate and restore the environment. SERVPRO of Manahawkin has this capability.
