Mold: The Fungus Among Us
5/15/2020 (Permalink)
You’ve heard of mold before, but what is it really? What’s commonly referred to as mold, is a fungus, a multicellular plant-like organism. Fungi are encountered everywhere in normal concentrations, indoors and out. In many instances, fungi are not harmful and, in some cases, may even be beneficial. Fungi are used to ripen cheeses providing flavor, mushrooms can be eaten as food and yeasts are a component of fermentation processes that are used in the production of alcoholic beverages and some types of bread. Why do we mention this? Because it’s important to understand that fungi are naturally occurring and part of our ecosystem and not something that shows up unannounced. Mold, even the good kind, can amplify and become a problem for your home and its occupants if there are conditions to support it. In most circumstances, we find that uncontrolled humidity, poor maintenance, and undetected leaks are the primary factors that lead to uncontrolled mold issues. When considering mold mitigation or remediation, it’s critically important to take these factors into account to ensure the long-term success of your project. Have questions about mold remediation?
