Spring Time Means Mold Time
4/6/2022 (Permalink)
It’s been a cold winter, but Spring is here, and summer is not far behind. When living in the Jersey Shore you can be certain that there will be moisture lurking. Maybe in the attic, basement, crawlspace or in that box of old clothes in the closet you haven’t opened in years. It has been a wet winter, and with water comes mold. Once the warmer temperatures hit those moist areas, it is a perfect environment for mold growth. Heat, humidity, and moisture are the number one cause of mold in homes or businesses. Mold will continue to grow if the conditions are right. We get many calls this time of year just for these reasons. Callers often ask, will the mold come back once it is cleaned or treated? and our answer is, only if you change the conditions that caused the mold in the first place. A simple example is a crawlspace that has a leaky pipe unrepaired or the hole in the roof that turned your attic black. Repairs and the changes to the environment must be made dry and clean to avoid regrowth.
SERVPRO of Manahawkin is proud to serve our local communities as a resource for facts and suggestions about mold. As remediators, who do the work on a regular basis, we have come to know the conditions typical to the shore area. Humidity and Mold Remediation in Ocean County NJ
Hey, Ocean County, you feel that in the air? No, we’re not talking about love. We’re talking about humidity *ick*. Summer is almost here which means even your sweat has sweat, thanks to all the moisture in the air. If you’re a homeowner, hold onto your popsicles! Sweat isn’t the only annoyance humidity brings. If you live here, you already know that uncontrolled humidity can contribute to mold growth in your home or business. If you are just visiting, or are new to the area, now you know! Some of the key indicators of humidity problems are musty odors, sweaty windows, and even damp feeling bedsheets. Oh, and don’t forget frizzy hair! We find that unattended crawlspaces, undiscovered leaks, and malfunctioning HVAC systems are the primary causes of these issues. Left unattended, excessive humidity can escalate to mold and indoor air quality issues. So, if you think you have an issue, or if you find mold in your house, who do you call? Mold: The Fungus Among Us
5/15/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Manahawkin Technicians are Mold Experts
You’ve heard of mold before, but what is it really? What’s commonly referred to as mold, is a fungus, a multicellular plant-like organism. Fungi are encountered everywhere in normal concentrations, indoors and out. In many instances, fungi are not harmful and, in some cases, may even be beneficial. Fungi are used to ripen cheeses providing flavor, mushrooms can be eaten as food and yeasts are a component of fermentation processes that are used in the production of alcoholic beverages and some types of bread. Why do we mention this? Because it’s important to understand that fungi are naturally occurring and part of our ecosystem and not something that shows up unannounced. Mold, even the good kind, can amplify and become a problem for your home and its occupants if there are conditions to support it. In most circumstances, we find that uncontrolled humidity, poor maintenance, and undetected leaks are the primary factors that lead to uncontrolled mold issues. When considering mold mitigation or remediation, it’s critically important to take these factors into account to ensure the long-term success of your project. Have questions about mold remediation? Check out our Mold Damage tips page at SERVPROmanahawkin.com or call us at 609-549-0379 to talk with a specialist.
Why is Mold in My House?

SERVPRO of Manahawkin Technicians are Mold Experts
Excess humidity and moisture are the number one cause of mold growth in homes and businesses. Any damp, wet, unattended area is the ideal home for mold. Even homes and businesses with ordinarily ideal environmental conditions can immediately become an environment conducive for mold amplification and growth if water is introduced. Examples of unwanted water intrusion include roof leaks, leaking pipes, or malfunctioning air conditioning systems. In as little as 48 hours, mold can quickly become a problem.
So, why is there mold in your house?

Mold Season is Coming
3/23/2020 (Permalink)
Summer is coming to the Jersey Shore and you can be certain that there will be moisture on the east coast. “So, what?” you ask? Frizzy hair is not the only quirk that comes with the high-humidity season. Soon we will be immersed in long, hot days of melted popsicles, musty lawn mowers and possibly, you guessed it, mold growth. Excess humidity and moisture are the number one cause of mold in homes or businesses. Mold, defined by some as allergens and irritants, will definitely defeat the feel-good summer vibe we’ve been waiting all winter for. You may have seen in the media stories about “black mold” and “toxic mold” which are definite buzz kills. These stories can be both alarming and confusing and most likely, do little to help you understand what you may be experiencing in your home.

Does Your Home in Long Beach Island Have A Mold Problem?

SERVPRO of Manahawkin Mold Remediation in Long Beach island
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Making a Happy Customer

Often that call comes in when a homeowner thinks they have a mold problem and they need a professional to evaluate the conditions. We scheduled an appointment and met with the homeowner. We didn’t see any major issues that would need our services and gave them a recommendation whereas they could tackle the problem on their own. Below is a copy of an email we received shortly after our visit from the homeowner.
Hi Chris,
I just wanted to thank you for the insight into our "mold problem". As I was cleaning the baseboards in order to paint them, I noticed that there was what looked like a dark colored dust on the top of them. When I sprayed them with Windex the "dust" seemed to grow. It was the dog hair that magically sprang up and when I wiped it clean it was dark black with a bunch of specks. After our conversation I'm confident that it was the mold attaching itself to that dog hair that was all over the house. I have cleaned every nook and cranny of that house and removed bags of dog hair. I feel so much better knowing that was probably the bulk of the problem...I still think there is some in the closet, but I've cleaned and painted that, and I leave that door open to air it out.
Again, thank you so much for giving me an honest, straight forward answer to my issue. It is very refreshing to know there are still trustworthy, honest people out there. I can't thank you enough.
Signed, Happy Customer

Answer from www.epa.gov/mold/moldbasics.html
Molds are usually not a problem indoors, unless mold spores land on a wet or damp spot and begin growing.
Molds are part of the natural environment. Outdoors, molds play a part in nature by breaking down dead organic matter such as fallen leaves and dead trees, but indoors, mold growth should be avoided. Molds reproduce by means of tiny spores; the spores are invisible to the naked eye and float through outdoor and indoor air. Mold may begin growing indoors when mold spores land on surfaces that are wet. There are many types of mold, and none of them will grow without water or moisture.
It is impossible to get rid of all mold and mold spores indoors; some mold spores will be found floating through the air and in house dust. The mold spores will not grow if moisture is not present. Indoor mold growth can and should be prevented or controlled by controlling moisture indoors. If there is mold growth in your home, you must clean up the mold and fix the water problem. If you clean up the mold, but don't fix the water problem, most likely, the mold problem will come back.
What is mold?
3/2/2018 (Permalink)
What is mold?
The term “mold” is a colloquial term for a group of filamentous fungi that are common on food or wet materials. This includes the green Penicillium species that produces penicillin, and fungi that spoil our bread, fruit, cheese and crops. Most of these are Ascomycetes that produce a lot of spores.
The majority of the molds that grow on damp building materials are found in the soil and are adapted to grow on a wide variety of materials. Outdoors, molds live in the soil, on plants, and on dead or decaying matter. There are thousands of species of mold and they can be any color. Different mold species are adapted to different moisture conditions ranging from very wet to just damp. Many times, mold can be detected by a musty odor. Live spores act like seeds, forming new mold growths (colonies) under the right conditions. All of us are exposed to a variety of fungal spores daily in the air we breathe, both outdoors and indoors.
Identifying Black Mold
3/2/2018 (Permalink)
In terms of mold, the scariest subject is "Black Mold" or sometimes referred to as "Toxic Mold". Now when these two combinations are put together, there seems to be a common fear among people and this is mainly due to the misunderstanding and diagnoses of what they actually have. We are here to help, so please do not hesitate and give us a call if you have any questions.
How Do I Tell If It’s Black Mold?
Since many types of mold can cause reactions, you should contact us regardless of the color or type of mold. We will then arrange a time to come out to your location and conduct a basic evaluation to properly assess the situation, to help you determine a plan-of-action.

Mold Prevention Tips
3/2/2018 (Permalink)
Mold prevention is ideal, whether you are a homeowner, property manager or operating a business, but many do not know where to start in terms of how to prevent mold; what actually causes mold and the spread of it. Mold can spread in as little as 24-to-48 hours and moisture enables this growth. Therefore if something is wet in your home for more than 24 hours, then you run the risk of mold contamination and growth. The things to consider when preventing mold is preventing water leaks and condensation. Leaks, no matter how small they may seem can increase the risk of mold. If you have any leaks i.e. roof, pipes, taps or other streams of water, you should act quickly and fix the source of these leaks to prevent mold damage. The next thing to consider is preventing condensation. Preventing condensation may seem a bit overwhelming as condensation refers to water vapor in the air landing on cold surfaces and becomes liquid. This can be prevented by keeping rooms warm and installing insulation in addition to potentially insulating the surfaces themselves.

The right conditions can be found anywhere. The most susceptible are areas in your home or business that are infrequently visited or inspected. Attics, crawlspaces, closets, basements, and storage sheds are common problem areas.
Leaks and vapor intrusion are common in these areas and if left unattended, can lead to mold growth.

Quick Tip: Preventing Mold Within Your Ocean County Home
7/19/2016 (Permalink)
Prevent Mold Within Your Ocean County Home
The Basics on Mold

What is mold?

Does Your Ocean County Home Have A Mold Problem?
6/27/2016 (Permalink)
Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level.
